Green Party supports Keep Trade Local campaign

Cllr Jillian Creasy

10th October 2008
The Federation of small businesses is intensifying its campaign to save
independant shops and pubs. They are mounting an exhibition at Castle
Markets tomorrow, Friday 10th October.

Green Party Cllr Jillian Creasy said: “”We are deeply concerned about the continuing loss of small businesses Shops and pubs run by large chains are springing up all over Sheffield. Tesco have been given planning permission for a huge new store just outside the Wicker Arches will adversely affect the Castle Market stall holders and small shops in Burngreave. Only last week the Planning Board gave permission for a Tesco Express on Abbeydale Road. A member of the board claimed that the area would be improved, completely failing to understand that smaller outlets including independant shops will be forced out of business with loss of jobs and less choice for customers.

“We see the same effect in the city centre, with large chains taking over
the “night time economy”. “Sheffield is rapidly becoming a clone city. We support the Federation of Small Businesses in its efforts to reverse this trend.”
