Green Party calls for equal pay

Sheffield Green Party took a motion to Full Council yesterday (March 3rd) to
address the issue of pay inequality between men and women employees

Councillor Bernard Little said, “The Green Party believe that sex discrimination
is wrong in principle and should be eliminated from the workforce. Care
workers, scCouncillor Bernard Littlehool dinner ladies and escorts of special needs home-school
transport should be paid the same as workers employed in gardening and street
cleaning.

“The Green Group are asking Sheffield City Council to carefully consider the
recent Court of Appeal decision that recognised the pay inequality between male and female employees and referred the case back to an employment tribunal. We note the Court of Appeal has asked for an employment tribunal to allow the Council the opportunity to justify their postition if they choose to.

The Green Party want the Council to come to a swift and fair decision as the
Council has its own policies on equity and fairness.

“We recognise that the Council may not have the money to pay any shortfall.  Pay inequalities are a national issue and we are therefore calling on the
Government to help to fund any entitlement that is due.”
