Residents Against Station Closure Press Release

On Friday March 19th at 4.30pm Residents Against Station Closure will be demonstrating at Sheffield Station.

We will re-assert the right to walk across the bridge. This is in response to East Midlands Trains actions in continuing to close the footbridge whenever they choose. The demonstration is be supported by all three political groups on the City Council. Paul Scriven (Lib Dem leader of the Council), Jan Wilson(Labour Leader), Rob Murphy (Green Party Transport spokesperson) and Paul Bloomfield (Labour Parliamentary candidate) will all be speaking.

RASC chairperson Keith Hayman commented “We are very disappointed that EMT have not taken the Council’s advice and thought of a way to stop fare dodging that doesn’t massively inconvenience the general public. We have been campaigning against these plans for 2 years with the overwhelming support of the Sheffield public. EMT on the other hand continue to harass and annoy travellers with their human barriers that prevent people walking through the station. They have even insisted the door to the Sheffield Tap public house to the platform should not be used at certain times.”

RASC press officer Graham Wroe
commented “It is clear that EMT is determined to close the footbridge to everyone,  each time they decide  to check tickets. As this heavy handed approach to ticket checking,  is  completely unnecessary we remain equally determined that access across the footbridge will be maintained. “
