Woeful consultations

Dear Sir

The parties running Sheffield have a woeful track record on public consultations. A low point was the sham consultation under Labour on the future of Wisewood School. That was followed up by the LIb Dems presiding over a similar exercise for the recently closed Abbeydale Grange School. Now the people of Sheffield are being asked to make suggestions about how they would like to see Council services cut. This is a case of politicians acting like headless chickens asking the turkeys to vote for Christmas.

Of course, most of the cuts would not be necessary if we closed massive tax loopholes exploited by the rich and did not renew the Trident nuclear missile programme. Those are Green party policies but the coalition is not interested and neither were Labour in power. At the recent emergency budget meeting, Green Councillors put forward fully costed alternatives to Lib Dem cuts. They would have invested in money-saving, job creating projects and saved some of the essential services for children and young people, but these ideas were rejected by the Lib Dems.

Yours Sincerely
Eamonn Ward
