£20 billion on Trident is a waste of money

Dear Sir

The coalition government is planning to go ahead with renewing Trident, our nuclear weapon system. Meanwhile, they are cutting benefits and public services. Unlike Labour and the Lib Dems, the Green Party went into the election clearly promising not to make cuts and to dismantle nuclear weapons for good.

In our manifesto the Green Party said “We cannot conceive of any circumstances in which we would use these expensive and immoral weapons ; we would decommission the existing system and not renew it.”

The projected replacement cost of Trident is around £20 billion with another £80 billion in running costs over 30 years. Unlike the coalition government, we have no doubt at all that this would be better spent creating peacetime jobs and supporting those without them.

Yours Sincerely

Eamonn Ward
