Road safety money should be targetted where it will save most lives

Dear Editor

Paul Licence doubts if Labour’s “favoured area” policy closes the poverty gap.

Tragically the Liberal Democrats have taken away much needed money allocated to
road safety from the areas that have the most accidents, and given it to the
areas that have the least!  This policy is bound to cost lives.

The inner city
has to cope with commuting traffic from all over Sheffield and beyond. It is no surprise that a pedestrian is 20 times more likely to be knocked down by a car in Central Ward than in Fulwood Ward.  A pedestrian in Darnall is 7 times more likely to be knocked down than a pedestrian in Dore and Totley. Why then do the Lib Dems think it is fair that each Community Assembly should have the same amount of funding?

The Green Party does not support Labour’s “favoured area” policy but would prioritise 20mph limits for Sheffield’s residential streets and ensure that the road safety money is spent where it can save most lives.

Yours sincerely
