Sharrow Today article focuses on Jillian Creasy

Who are you?

I became Sheffield’s first Green councillor in 2004 and was re-elected in 2007. I originally moved to Sheffield to complete my medical training. I have lived in or near Sharrow for 25 years, first in a shared house on Cemetery Rd and then in Broomhall. I still work as a part time GP, but being a councillor takes up much of my time. As the leader of the Green Group on the council I influence city-wide issues as well as supporting individuals and campaigns in Central ward. To relax, I enjoy my allotment, cooking, music and friends.

What do you like most about Sharrow?

I like Sharrow’s diversity. There are people from every part of the world, and every type of background. There are modern flats, council estates and Victorian terraces. There are restaurants, shops, businesses and industry. It’s a cross between inner city and world village – life is never dull.

What is you favourite place in Sharrow

Top of my list is London Road during the Sharrow Lantern Festival. But through my involvement with them, I’ve grown fond of many places: Sharrow Sure Start, the Old Junior School, Highfield Library, General Cemetery, Duchess Road playground, Lowfield Primary School, Madina Mosque, Highfield Trinity, Mount Pleasant Park, Portland Works.

What would you change about Sharrow?

In 7 years as a councillor I’ve helped improve things, for instance the re-roofing on Lansdowne and cladding on Leverton; pedestrian crossings on London Rd, a dedicated street-cleaner in Highfield and the Mount Pleasant park ranger. I will continue to work to improve poor quality housing, traffic, litter and crime.

Why would you make a good councillor ?

I have helped hundreds of individuals with problems like housing and parking. I have campaigned to save library opening hours, improve green spaces, increase recycling, protect Sure Start, support youth facilities, improve disabled access. I attend meetings and deliver regular newsletters, keeping in touch across the whole of Sharrow.
