Greens say more action needed for the low-paid and those on benefits

Commenting on the living wage proposals for today’s Sheffield Council Cabinet meeting, local Greens’ chairperson Jon Ashe said “We’ve been pushing for a living wage for Council workers for over 3 years, so we’re glad the Council is making this step. But we also want a living wage to be paid to everyone. A good next step would be to ensure that people working for the Council’s contractors also get a living wage.”

He added “Everyone should have a good income, whether they’re in work or not. That’s why we oppose the Government’s plans to reduce benefits in real terms. Instead, they should tackle the high levels of tax dodging and create jobs to boost the economy.”
