Poor choice for Police Commissioner

Sheffield Green Party congratulates Sheffield for Democracy and the Sheffield Star for holding hustings for the Police Commissioner elections but is disappointed at the four candidates.

The Green Party opposes the post of Police Commissioner because of the almost complete lack of accountability except every five years. The Green Party is not standing a candidate.

Local Green Spokesperson, Aodan Marken, said,

“We opposed the creation of the Police Commissioner position, as there are dangers associated with a single politician being given so much power over the police.”

“All local public services should be accountable to the people through the local council and elected councillors. We would prefer to see good independent candidates come forward but the £5000 deposit and lack of funded candidate mailings were barriers they could not overcome.”
