Greens on the Up

Our membership and support continue to grow steadily. National membership has almost doubled in the past year – the trend locally is similar. Recent opinion polls show increased support for the Greens.

So we’re getting excited about our prospects here in future council and parliamentary elections, both in 2015 and subsequently. Wouldn’t it be great to increase our number of councillors from the current 4 to 10 or even more? And imagine having a Green MP here!

Come to our social event in Walkley Sunday 9 November

Walkley Community Centre, 7A Fir St, Sheffield, S6 3TG from 4pm to 5.15pm. With hot and cold drinks, cake and biscuits. All members and supporters are very welcome – it’s a good opportunity for new members and supporters to meet other people. Jillian Creasy and Peter Garbutt will say a few words about their general election campaigns in Central and Hallam; and Sue Morton will say a bit about Walkley activity. The 95 bus route stops close to the venue at the bottom of Fir Street and the 52 bus stops near the top end. If you let us know in advance that you’re coming, that helps us plan for numbers. Please e-mail Sue Morton via greeningsue@gmail.com or ring her on 0114 2346827.

Please bring a medium-sized backpack or shoulder bag to carry newspapers.

If you can offer help delivering newspapers in Central, Broomhill, Nether Edge, Manor Castle or Walkley wards, please contact Eamonn Ward. Doing a regular round close to or within easy reach of where you live, really helps us by freeing up time for councillors and activists.

Canvassing (ie door-knocking), second Sunday of the month – Talking to people on the doorstep year round is the backbone of the work that has got our councillors elected since 2004. You’ll be paired up with an experienced canvasser until you feel confident. We go to a café or pub afterwards. The next mass canvass is in Central ward on Sunday 9 November. Meet outside Amigos café, 224-230 London Rd, S2 4LW (near the junction with Sharrow Lane), at 2pm. Please text Rob Murphy on 07580 498392 so he knows you’re coming.

To be kept informed about weekly canvassing sessions in our main target wards, please e-mail Gill Black (Central ward) and Eamonn Ward (Broomhill ward).

Meeting in Rotherham Thursday 20 November

The response to the e-mail to set a meeting date was very positive. We have booked the upstairs room at The Bridge Inn, 1 Greasbrough Rd, Rotherham, S60 1RB on Thursday November 20th from 7.30 to 9pm. David Burley from Frack Free South Yorkshire will have a short slot in the meeting – another good reason to come! Thanks to Ann for these directions : “The Bridge Inn is about 2 minutes walk from the Interchange. Just cross over the bridge in the direction of the train station and the Inn is directly on your right. There is no car park, but going towards the town centre, if you turn left in front of the Bridge Inn, then there is a car park just beyond the Trades Club. It is pay and display but may not be at that time of night. Alternatively, there is the multistorey straight ahead.”

Jon Ashe (Chair), Eamonn Ward (Election Agent) and Aodan Marken (Chair, Young Greens) will be at the meeting which is open to members and supporters but is not a public meeting. We know how desperate Rotherham people are for political change in the town. So we hope lots of people attend this meeting. If you are unable to attend but want to be involved, please e-mail Eamonn Ward who can also be contacted on the 20th via 0750 3883740.
