Smithy Wood should be given Village Green status.

davidgarlovskySheffield Green Party is backing the campaign to save Smithy Wood. Green Party member David Garlovsky said, “We need to preserve habitats like this, not only because they are irreplaceable but because access to the natural environment improves human wellbeing. It is unthinkable that an ancient wood could be destroyed to build a motorway service station.”

The Woodland Trust, along with the local Sheffield Wildlife Trust, has joined with thousands of local people to defend an ancient wood under threat from a planning application for a motorway service station & associated development off J35 on M1.

The ancient woodland functions as a unique and irreplaceable habitat for both the residents and the many species of wildlife that call it home. There are kestrels, woodpeckers, bullfinches and song thrushes nesting in Smithy Wood. It also offers people the opportunity to exercise, unwind and socialise with their friends and families.

As well as working with the Woodland Trust, a local community group, Cowley Residents Action Group [Jean Howe, Chair], has separately put together an application for Village Green status of Smithy Wood.

It is expected that a decision will be made on the application for Village Green Status for Smithy Wood by SCC’s Licensing Committee by mid 2015. Currently an independent QC is being appointed to hear evidence and advise the Committee. If granted village green status will protect Smithy Wood from future development proposals.

Sheffield Green Party supports both Village Green status and the rejection of the planning application which would otherwise see this 850 year old wood decimated.
