Councillor Creasy appeals to Sheffield College to rethink redundancies

jillian-nhs-megasphoneCouncillor Jillian Creasy has sent the following letter to Richard Wright MBE, Chair of Governors of Sheffield College. You can support the campaign to stop the redundancies by signing this petition.

Dear Sheffield College Governors

We are very concerned to hear that up to 75 members of staff are to be made redundant or have their post removed or downgraded at Sheffield College. Many of the residents of our ward have benefited from the education that Sheffield College has provided. It is very concerning that lecturing staff feel they have no alternative to oppose these measures but to go on strike.

We appreciate the Government has cut the adult skills budget by 32% in real terms since 2010. However these redundancies have been rushed and are short sighted, and highly damaging to the prospects of the people of Sheffield who desperately need the college and the opportunities for education and training that it provides.

We are requesting that, even at this late hour, you reconsider the redundancy situation so that strikes can be avoided and the good reputation of Sheffield College as both an excellent educational establishment and a fair minded employer is not tarnished.

Yours sincerely

Councillor Jillian Creasy
