Vote to make Society Better

Sheffield Green Party Chairperson Jon Ashe

The Scottish referendum engaged people in a way not seen for decades. And the 7th May general and council elections are attracting lots of interest in Sheffield – there has been a big upsurge in voter registration in the past month. For example, over 6,000 voters recently registered in Sheffield Central constituency where I live, with a large proportion of them students and young people.

Many young people are excited by next week’s elections, which is really positive for this country’s future. I hope adults of all ages will turn out in large numbers to vote next Thursday to change society for the better.

The extremely popular local leader of the local Green group, Councillor JIllian Creasy, is going all-out to win Sheffield Central and is the main challenger to Labour. The Green Party polled well over 30% in the most recent Council elections and is sure to build on that support come the General Election. Other Parliamentary candidates include local teacher and community worker Peter Garbutt challenging Nick Clegg in Sheffield Hallam and lecturer Christine Gilligan Kubo hoping to do well in Brightside and Hillsborough.  Rita Wilcock, local community health worker and disability rights campaiginer, is standing in Heeley and Linda Duckenfield is contesting Sheffield South East.
