Benefit cuts may be unlawful

stewart kempcroppedscaledSetting a benefit cap of £26,000 put Britain in breach of its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Deputy President of the Supreme Court, Lady Hale said,  “Claimants will not receive the money the state deems necessary for them adequately to house, feed, clothe and warm themselves and their children”. The drastic further reduction of the cap to £20,000 will now extend poverty to 150,000 households. Green MP Caroline Lucas believes it may be unlawful and will fight for changes to the budget as it goes through Parliament. We must all challenge the idea of the undeserving poor and work toward a more equal society.
