Green Councillors urge the Council to remember the fundamental human dignity of disabled people

Green Councillors yesterday (8/6/16) urged the Council to remember the fundamental human dignity of disabled people.

The call comes as an addition to a Labour motion highlighting the increasing gap in employment rates between disabled and non-disabled people. Whilst the ruling party noted schemes to help disabled people into work, the Green councillors’ amendment also asks for dignity for those disabled people who are not going to be in paid employment.

Cllr Douglas Johnson said,

“We must never forget that every human being has a fundamental worth and dignity. No-one should underestimate the barriers that people with disabilities face in society. We therefore oppose this Government’s propaganda about ‘hard-working families’.

Paid employment is not the only measure of a person’s worth.”
