Heritage Open Days offer some surprises!

Jessops constructionscaledHeritage Open Days 2016 will see 85 varied events in the Sheffield area from September 8th to 11th. It’s a fantastic opportunity to gain guided access to many historic buildings.  But also walking tours, singing, bell ringing, “drainspotting” and much more. The always creative Friday Night Bike Ride will cycle the route of the zeppelin bomb raid in remembrance of 28 people killed on September 25th 1916. The Star has a Retro event with a radical journalism talk and access to old bound volumes.

A lot of work goes into planning these events so do support them. The full programme is here.

One event you might not expect is a guided tour of the new University of Sheffield building, The Diamond on Leavygreave Rd. It was built after the forced demolition of the Grade 2 listed Jessop Hospital building despite massive objections from the Sheffield Conservation Advisory Group and Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society, supported by many national bodies. It’s definitely a “Lost Heritage Open Day” event.
