Steve Barnard

Local Election Candidate for Gleadless Valley.

Steve with Caroline Lucas, MP - Green Party Leader

I live in Heeley with my wife and two children – one currently attends Carfield school.  I am a former City Councillor now working in community development and have worked for Heeley Development Trust. Government cuts will hit everyone in this ward.  People living in Newfield Green, Herdings, Heeley and Meersbrook rely on public services for travel, work, schools or leisure activities.  Everyone will suffer when services are axed and jobs are lost.  The Green Party has clearly outlined why cuts are not needed, and, if elected, I will work with local people in the fight to protect this community.

In Sheffield two Green Councillors have made a real difference by forcing the Council to adopt a living wage policy, committing to 20mph zones and improve recycling.  In Gleadless Valley ward Greens have been active in :

  • supporting residents to get new play equipment in Meersbrook Park
  • installing traffic calming measures
  • campaigning against damaging planning applications
  • sorting out potholes, broken bins, blocked gullies and overgrown trees
  • arguing for more funding for tree planting in the area
  • securing funding for the South Yorkshire Energy Centre at Heeley City Farm
  • helping bring The Bean (a kickabout area) back into use

Cuts to vital public services, benefits and pensions are not needed if the government:

• Closes massive tax loopholes

• Gets more people into work

• Cuts Trident nuclear missiles

• Taxes the money markets

• Taxes bank profits and cuts bonuses

Greens say create 1 million new jobs by investing in renewable energy, public transport and housing. Scrap tuition fees and reinstate the Educational Maintenance Allowance.

The Green Party says NO to cuts and YES to investment in jobs.
