Green Councillors on the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Committee have welcomed the new Sheffield City Centre Access and Movement Plan which aims to set out ways to get into and around the City Centre that work for everyone.

The plan was produced with the involvement of a cross-party Task and Finish group, which Green Councillors Ruth Mersereau and Alexi Dimond played an active role in.

City Ward Councillor Ruth Mersereau said

“I’ve really enjoyed being a part of theTask and Finish group that has worked on this plan over the last year, and it’s fantastic to see this plan being approved.

“As a City Ward councillor, I’m very happy to see this. We need to prioritise trams, buses, walking, wheeling and cycling, not least because of the reality of climate change, but also because of the pollution, noise and danger caused by a city centre designed mainly for motor vehicles.

“The city centre is going through a really exciting transformation, and now is the perfect opportunity to improve our streets, making them nicer, more liveable, as well as more attractive to residents and visitors, and safer for everyone.”

Cllr Alexi Dimond who is Deputy Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Change Committee said,

“As well as improving travel to and within the city centre, the plan will also have other benefits: making it a more attractive and pleasant and fairer place, with safer streets, cleaner air and more disabled parking spaces.

The plan won the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (Yorkshire Region) Award which recognizes how the plan addresses equality, diversity, and inclusion.
