Dear Mr Imran Ahmad Khan MP,

We note that South Yorkshire Asylum and Migration Action Group (SYMAAG) investigations show that up to 180 of your constituents at the Urban House Initial Asylum Accommodation are being placed at unnecessary risk of contracting Covid-19. This includes a pregnant woman, children, an infant, and other vulnerable people forced to share rooms and eat in communal areas unable to self-isolate or practise social distancing. Residents have not been provided with PPE or adequate sanitation.

As you will be aware, Urban House is operated by Mears under the Home Office’s asylum contract. We understand that residents are arriving and departing from Urban House without suitable monitoring, checking or testing placing themselves and the wider community – including cities such as Sheffield – at risk of infection. This despite a suspected case of Covid-19 being reported at Urban House on 22nd March.

Please can you urgently advise:

  • Whether there have been confirmed cases of Covid-19 at Urban House.
  • What steps have been taken to ensure vulnerable people can self-isolate and practise social distancing.
  • That you will urgently move residents to safe accommodation if Urban House cannot conform to emergency Covid-19 regulations.

We look forward to your prompt response.

Sincerely,

Sheffield Green Party
