Following the decision by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to provide £190 million of funding for Doncaster Sheffield Airport Councillor Angela Argenzio said,
“Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be receiving £190 million of public funds. Why should the taxpayer have to prop up this project when other airports like Leeds Bradford Airport are supported by £160 million private finance. If the private sector isn’t prepared to invest in the airport it doesn’t give me confidence that there is a strong business case for it.
“That £190 million of funding would be better invested in projects that improve our environment rather than ones that increase our carbon emissions.
“Improving bus, tram and train services and making it easier for people to get around are the sort of transport schemes that would help more people in their everyday lives. Supporting public transport is the best use of public money.”
“Supporting skills to improve the insulation and heating of our homes, reducing energy bills and carbon emissions would be a much better use of these funds than this risky and polluting venture.”
