Green Councillors are celebrating as safety cameras have been approved for enforcing parking restrictions on a road near a local school.

A School Street temporarily closes roads to most motor vehicles during school drop-off and pick-up times to create a safer, quieter environment for children and to encourage active travel. These restrictions improve air quality by reducing pollution and create more space for pedestrians and cyclists,

Green Party Councillors have been pushing for enforcement cameras on roads where people regularly ignore the parking restrictions at school opening and closing times.

Following approval at September’s Transport Regeneration and Climate Committee, the first school where Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed is Broomhill Infants. They will be installed on Beech Hill Road adjacent to the school.

Broomhill and Sharrow Vale Councillor Angela Argenzio said,

“ I am really pleased that we are getting these ANPR cameras installed at Broomhill Infants to keep children safe. This is something that we as local Councillors have been pressing the Council on.

Broomhill and Sharrow Vale Councillor Brian Holmshaw said,

“ It was a positive step when School Streets parking restrictions were introduced but sadly some inconsiderate drivers are regularly flouting the rules putting pupils at risk. The threat of receiving a Penalty Charge Notice should deter those drivers who regularly park outside the school at picking up and dropping off time.

Broomhill and Sharrow Vale Councillor Maleiki Haybe said,

“We are keen to see how effective the cameras will be at changing behaviour and making it a safer place for pupils. If it is successful it will be a good example for other School Streets in Sheffield to follow,”
