Dear Editor,
We’re in a climate emergency. The aviation industry is one of the biggest polluters, causing a huge impact on global heating.
And that has the worst impact on those countries we like to fly to and which are the ones most affected by rising sea levels, tropical storms, floods and droughts.
Airport expansion is completely unsustainable and can’t be justified.
But, even if you don’t care about climate change, it’s a huge amount of money to put into a failing business.
It just doesn’t fly.
The previous Doncaster airport was closed down by the private business that ran it.
Now, when Doncaster Council tendered for a new operator, no business would touch it. That tells you what the industry really thinks about the viability of Doncaster airport.
Nearly £200 million of public money is to be spent on this project – money that could be spent on other things to make people in South Yorkshire better off.
In Sheffield we have benefited from this funding on regeneration projects from Sheffield Castle Park to Stocksbridge, from event spaces to flood defences. This funding makes these projects happen. Doncaster Council is putting every penny of theirs into the airport and will have nothing left.
