In response to Andy Burnham’s Speech at Labour Party Conference City Ward Councillor Douglas Johnson said
“The speech from Andy Burnham, talking positively about proportional representation, a National Care Service and the possibility of rejoining the EU, is welcome but why are we going to have to wait at least 3 years before we see any action?
“Labour has one of the biggest majorities it has ever had and it is risking progress on these important issues by not taking action now, 2 years after they were kicked down the line after the 2024 general election.
“What also concerns me is the lack of progress on action on climate change. I have big concerns that Labour will support the opening of the Jackdaw and Rosebank oilfields. There is still no action on a national retrofit scheme to ensure homes are energy efficient at a time of rising fuel prices. Labour are still backing airport expansion in Doncaster and at London Heathrow.
“Local Councils like Sheffield remain underfunded with ongoing pressure on vital adult health and children’s care services. So austerity has not gone away under Labour or with a new Prime Minister
“Warm words are fine but what we really need is action. Waiting at least 3 years is not good enough.”
