Magid supports local charities

Cllr Magid Magid aims to help and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds as Lord Mayor – and raise £100,000 for 3 local charities. Broomhall based Unity Gym Project helps young people. Sheffield Flourish supports people with mental health issues. Sheffield Women’s Counselling & Therapy Services, supports women suffering abuse or trauma. Magid says: “Many smaller charities save people’s lives and it felt right to support them.”

Teamwork in Broomhall

Working with police, housing groups and Amey, Cllr Kaltum Rivers initiated action to remove bin shelter roofs and cut back trees to improve lighting to reduce anti-social behaviour and drug dealing. Kaltum has also advised on, and monitored, work funded by People for Places to replace windows, doors and roof gutters on the Springfield estate and remove leaves and small shrubs creating danger for elderly residents on Clinton Walk.

Renters need citywide licensing

Green councillors support this petition from renters union ACORN. Kaltum says: “Rents are rocketing while vulnerable people live in poor conditions with insecure tenancies. We’re pushing the Labour-run council to extend licensing citywide, building on schemes in Page Hall and the London Rd area.” Sign the petition at bit.ly/slumlordban.

Neighbourhood plan is coming!

BBEST (bbest.org.uk) has completed consultation before a community adoption referendum in 201 9. Green councillors support this plan covering Broomhill, Broomfield, Endcliffe, Summerfield and Tapton. It will give local communities statutory power to make planning priorities and to engage in community development projects. Please also support local independent shops, showcased at www.broomhillsheffield.co.uk alongside local history!

Minor Injuries Unit saved

People power retained these vital services – for now. Greens used our place on the Scrutiny Committee and worked alongside Sheffield Save Our NHS in a massive campaign. Cllr Kaltum Rivers says “My family are among 1 8,000 annual users of the Minor Injuries Unit at Hallamshire Hospital in a convenient, central location. The Clinical Commissioning Group must urgently improve people’s access to their own GP surgeries before making any further plans.”
