This Spring was the driest in England for over a hundred years. Streams are running low and the ground is dry. Farmers are already having to water their crops. Drought has been declared and without much more rain there will be a hosepipe ban. We will see both droughts and flooding more often with the climate crisis.
So how can we save our water? The first thing to do is conserve water. For gardens that need watering, water butts are great. Waste water from washing up, baths, and showers is good for lawns and houseplants. For flower beds, put mulch around plants or grow ground cover plants like Thyme and Sedum to keep moisture in the soil.
The second thing is reducing how much water we use. Eco settings on washing machines or dishwashers are useful. Turn taps off and stop drips. A water saver in the toilet can save water on every flush.
Finally, and most importantly, we can bring water companies back into public ownership. Instead of our money giving Yorkshire Water’s chief exec a million pound paypacket, it could be used to fix pipes, increase storage, and stop sewage being dumped in our rivers and streams. Please support the ‘We Own It’ campaign and help save our water!
