Green Councillors are celebrating the success of their amendment calling for free bus travel in Sheffield for young people up to the age of 22.
The Green amendment follows Green Party Leader Zack Polanski’s launch of a national Green Party campaign in Sheffield last month – calling for free bus travel for young people.
Gleadless Valley Cllr Marieanne Elliot who proposed the amendment said
“We’re really pleased that Sheffield City Council has backed this Green Party campaign. The important thing now is to work cross party and with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to make this proposal a reality. We will collaborate with politicians from across the political spectrum to provide this new benefit for our young people in Sheffield.”
Hillsborough Cllr Christine Gilligan-Kubo said
“It is fitting that the city where the Green Party Leader Zack Polanski launched the campaign for free bus travel for the under 22s is the first to back it. The policy has been adopted already in Scotland following a successful proposal by Scottish Green MSPs in 2021.”
Bromhill and Sharrow Vale Cllr Maleiki Haybe said,
“Providing free bus travel for the under 22s is good for everyone.. More people using public transport makes it safer for everyone and will help ensure the viability of bus routes. As young people are more likely to use buses at night this will play an important role in maintaining evening services.”
