In talking with my neighbours, I heard from people who want to recycle but have to drive several miles, taking bags of plastic trays and cartons to the Council’s household recycling sites. They used to use the recycling facility at Waitrose on Ecclesall Road, which was taken away due to industrial action.
Sheffield City Council are now able to put the sites back, but, unlike other supermarkets, Waitrose is blocking its return. They are not responding to requests for meetings from the Council.
I have started a petition to get the recycling point back. In a couple of months, we will be able to recycle more in our brown bins, and that’s great. But, for some people, that won’t be enough.
Local recycling points help residents do more. All supermarkets should provide recycling facilities for the waste generated by their own packaging. Please support the petition and put pressure on Waitrose to do better.
