Since the very successful elections in May, the 20 Green Councillors have been settling into their new roles on the Council. Sheffield has a Committee system, and one of the most important roles of a Councillor is their work in these committees. It’s exciting to see so many Greens Chairing committees and wielding real influence on the future direction of the Council and they value your expertise and experience as they carry out their roles. The Lib Dems have chosen to exit the Council’s administration, so now sit in opposition with Reform.

Many members and supporters of the Green Party have vital expertise and lived experience, which should help shape the direction of the Council. Please don’t be shy in sharing your ideas to make Sheffield a better place to live and work with the Councillors

47,886 voters in Sheffield’s local elections voted for Green Party candidates, making them the most popular party across the whole of Sheffield.  The new expanded group of 20 Green councillors is now preparing to take on more roles to reflect what people in Sheffield voted for, with the LibDem group choosing to exit the council’s administration after losing seats.

Green councillors will now chair committees covering:

  •       Housing
  •       Transport, Regeneration and Climate
  •       Charity Trustee
  •       Communities, Parks and Leisure
  •       Adult Health and Social Care
  •       Planning (co-chair)
  •       Licensing (co-chair)

Labour councillors will take the rest of the committee chairs.

Green Group leader, Councillor Angela Argenzio, said,

“Green Party councillors will take up places in the Administration with Labour to make sure the city council is run in the best interests of everyone who lives in Sheffield.  We have worked hard to negotiate a functioning leadership of the council so that people in Sheffield can receive the best public services we can provide.

“It is obviously disappointing that the LibDem group has chosen to join the Reform councillors in opposing the council’s actions after 4 years of a shared committee administration.

“We are prepared to work with the Labour group to ensure stability. We will continue to champion openness and transparency in council proceedings, benefitting from the committee system where councillors from all parties can have a say and a vote. We will face up to difficult decisions, doing our best to find a balance between different viewpoints.”

“We would like to thank the voters of Sheffield for their message of hope and having faith in us.  Green councillors commit to listening to residents and acting in the best interests of the whole population of the city and the planet.”

Your most important consideration in choosing who to vote for at the local elections is to find someone who will work hard for your community. All the Green Party Candidates are passionate about their local area and ready to work, support, and stand up for their community.

International politics is also relevant in these elections.  Decisions made by local councils have a cumulative effect on events across the country and the planet. Sheffield Greens speak up for the rights of Palestinians and all people struggling against terror and oppression. We are the only party to consistently call for freedom for Palestine and an end to the Israeli occupation.

Many Sheffield residents have relatives in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, Yemen, and Iran and are heartbroken by the situation in their home countries. The Council banks with Barclays, who are deeply involved in financing the companies exporting weapons to Israel to carry out atrocities. Some of these weapons are partly manufactured here in Sheffield, and South Yorkshire Pensions Authority has investments in fossil fuels, weapons manufacturing and companies profiting from the illegal occupation of Palestine. (e.g. Airbnb, booking.com)

Sheffield Green Party have consistently spoken up for the rights of the Palestinian people and condemned Israel’s devastation of Gaza and beyond. Unlike other political parties, which have been complicit in the genocide in Gaza, the Green Party has consistently called for freedom for Palestine and for an end to the Israeli occupation and system of apartheid.

Sheffield Greens are the only party on the Council who have

*Voted to condemn the UK Government for its role in the genocide

*Voted for Sheffield to declare an Apartheid Free Zone

*Joined the Sheffield Palestine Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid

*Voted for the divestment of the Local Government Pension Scheme from companies supporting Israeli crimes

*Continued support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement

*Voted to condemn the proscription of Palestine Action and for the Government to lift the ban on this organisation.

While other political parties are complicit in their silence, Sheffield Greens have always stood up for human rights, international law, and the victims of genocide. Make your voice heard. Vote Green on 7th May.
